I think that Opera 7 and Opera 8 should be put into different SLOTs so that they can be installed in parallel. Of course then the ebuilds would need to be modified so that the installations won't conflict. I believe this is possible by putting all files belonging to Opera 8 in /opt/opera8 instead of /opt/opera and renaming the binary to opera8. I don't know if this is the right way to do it, but it seems to work for me. I'll attach an ebuild for that. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
Created attachment 55468 [details] modified ebuild
Created attachment 55469 [details] desktop file to go with the ebuild
The difficult part is in $HOME/.opera/ Even most of this stuff hasn't changed since v6, if I remember right, at some point they changed the indexing for imap mboxes. Looking at http://www.opera.com/support/mastering/sysadmin/#multi ---snip--- Alternative and multiple user configuration It is possible to use alternative settings file(s) for multiple version installations, alternative setups, and/or for supporting multiple users on the same system. More detailed information will be posted in the near future. (Relevant document is in draft stages.) ---snip--- We should get a copy of that document (currently unavailable, in draft) for a decision. Otherwise, the "other" browsers are also not slotted.
i don't see a reason for slotting them, if you find opera 8 unstable, don't use it, it's still beta. otherwise opera8 can do everything that opera7 can.
