-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 INTRODUCTION: One of gentoo's biggest strengths is the flexibility of portage: the compilation of packages can be customized through the global and the package USE flags. This flexibility makes distrubuting binary packages difficult, because many-many compiled variants are running on our computers as our USE flag settings and compiler switches differ (e.g. processor type, optimizations). GOAL: This enhancement proposal suggests sharing all the compiled binary packages, together with their compile settings. This would enable substituting the compilation by downloading a binary package compiled with the flags corresponding to our settings. DEVELOPEMENT IDEAS, STEPS: - Setting up a repository of binary packages. This may be centalized (like the mirrors now offering sources only), or based on peer-to-peer file sharing (e.g. gnunet). - Attaching the flags used during compilation to the corresponding binaries. (maybe as a part of the file name) - Extending emerge with the functionality of checking if a compiled binary variant is available, and downloading it. - Extending emerge with the functionality of uploading / sharing the compiled binaries. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFCU54RHtQFXWDY1R0RAj8jAKDjQwURcn0RS+QLeufByJxArdSEVQCeLJ2x REpi2Vx33WW61rk+z9YZaKM= =QPf+ -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
