When a system has no IDE-CD's it will boot into the initrd, and then fail to find any cdroms. Also a manual boot is needed because the tmscsi driver hangs the system. System is a gateway 2000, P450, with adaptec 7xxx card. All drives including CD's/Zip are hanging of this scsi card. This problem is probably related to udev/devfs or setting thereof because several modern 2.6 based linuxes fail to boot on this system (knoppix et al) This was also for 2005.0
So you booted with doscsi and are still not able to get 2005.0 to boot? If it locks on a particular driver, please try adding "noload=driver" where driver is the module name that the system hangs on, as this will tell the initrd to skip loading that driver. This is all for 2005.0, of course.
well not loading a driver is not an issue, after booting to the prompt (after failing to find the boot cdrom device you end up there), it still won't find a cd even after manualy modprobing the right drivers, and giving the commands that are in /linuxrc. The issue is it won;t find a cdrom. knoppix will not either. this probably is the udev/devfs setup which is unable to locate cdrom drives within the /dev filesystem. (the system has a cdrom and a cd rw)
The drives just don't show up in /dev/.....
UPDATE: Gentoo 2004.2 and 2004.3 as well as The Knoppix of three weeks back cannot boot on this system. My 2005.0 cdrom was damaged..., after making a new one it did boot through. On this system (Pentium II Deschutes, 400Mhz, 256 MB, ati rage pro, Adaptec 2940, gateway2000 system) the hwsetup -p halfway stops with a "Segmentation fault". hwsetup -v shows nothing afterwards. except again this "Segmentation fault" error message. BTW. It would make sense to have some md[0-9] device entries into /dev (mknod /dev/md0 b 9 0 ... mknod /dev/md9 b 9 9). This would make it a lot easier to setup raidsets. This would also be a nice thng to have on the stage 1/2/3 tar kits, I guess.
Additional update: Only the NONFB kernel from 2005.0 boots on this platform. Then fb version hangs when the system tries to load the splash artwork.
Got the system working not using fb. It is in production now, wont test anything on this track for a while..
