Trying to emerge gnome-vfs-2.8.4-r1 I get this:

creating libfile.la
/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory
libtool: link: `/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la' is not a valid libtool archive
make[3]: *** [libfile.la] Error 1

Please let me know if I didn't get the error there.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge gnome-vfs
2.
3.

Actual Results:  
!!! ERROR: gnome-base/gnome-vfs-2.8.4-r1 failed.
!!! Function gnome2_src_compile, Line 40, Exitcode 2
!!! compile failure

Expected Results:  
emerged gnome-vfs

does `fix_libtool_files.sh 3.3.4` help?

Nice Carlo, you are the man with the plan.  Can you tell me why that command was necessary?
