Description Greg Tassone 2005-04-03 16:18:25 UTC
GAIM encryption is broken when using the Jabber plugin. This bug is also being tracked upstream with the GAIM-Encryption project, but I wanted to file a bug here as well, as this STILL hasn't been fixed and it's going on two months old. If any information from other Gentoo-ers might help with this that would be nice.

The upstream bug listing is here:

https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1144888&group_id=57740&atid=485253

This is confirmed on the systems of all Gentoo Linux users that I've spoken to. Attempting to use GAIM and encryption with the Jabber protocol results in:

*** Encrypted with the Gaim-Encryption plugin

Let me know if I can provide assistance somehow.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Attempt to use GAIM Encryption over the Jabber protocol.

It appears to fail every time.

Filing bugs here that are confirmed upstream and known upstream is of no use to anyone. Offer your assistance on that upstream bug so Bill knows people are concerned about it.

Well, since that upstream bug seems resolved for some and not resolved for others, I wasn't sure if we had a Gentoo-specific issue going on here.

Furthermore, due to your repeated warnings that us Gentoo-ers should NOT seek assistance from the "upsteam" project led me to file this here.

*sigh*

If the bug is ALREADY UPSTREAM then there is no point in thinking it is gentoo-specific.

The memo is that distro users (not just Gentoo, they just seem to be the worst offenders) seek help for new bugs from the distro first. I tell people to *SEARCH* both upstream and local for existing bugs before filing new bugs with gentoo.

*sigh back*

Sorry to waste your time so needlessly. I was actually just trying to be helpful. The Gentoo environment has been very quiet on this particular bug. I could only find one post in the forums about it (in Italian), and nothing in Bugzilla.

Nevermind.
Comment 5 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-04 14:16:33 UTC
I don't mean to offend you or shrug off your helpfulness.

I'm just becoming worn down dealing with people not reading my instructions, not following the instructions they do read, or over-interpreting my instructions. To me it should be common sense when and when not to take something upstream.

Thanks for your bug report and finding the bug upstream. If upstream issues a patch feel free to notify me of it here. If upstream issues a new release I will receive a release notification automatically.
