After much playing around with nvidia on my Compaq Presario R3000 (amd64 Gentoo with GeForce4 440 Go 64M), Nvidia-1.0.7174 works perfectly after kernel upgrade to 2.6.11-whatever **IF** you add the next two lines to the bottom of the /etc/modules.d/nvidia file: options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 options nvidia NVreg_Mobile=0 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Upgrade to kernel 2.6.11-whatever 2. Emerge nvidia-1.0.7174-whatever 3. Add the indicated two lines to the bottom of the /etc/modules.d/nvidia file: 2. 3. Actual Results: Works perfectly. we have a policy that says that new versions of packages will keep testing for 30 days if they're not security-related. we'll mark it stable per 1st may if there are no problems
Note that once gentoo released the 2.6.11-r6 for amd64, the nvidia driver started acting up again. I did find that things were more well behaved once I upgraded my system BIOS to the most recient version. I have no trouble changing screen resolutions. However, every now and then, the driver does not start up the first time.
