Situation: after three wrong passwords from a user, root is not able to unlock that user with passwd -u Expected behavior: passwd -u username unlocks the user Steps to reproduce: as root: create a new testuser tttt with useradd tttt set the password with passwd tttt as user tttt: change to a console login prompt with <ctrl><alt><F2> Verify you can log in with the password log out try to login again 3 times with a wrong passwd. A message is displayed that the account was locked for 10 minutes due to 3 logins with wrong passwords Login as root Unlock user with passwd -u tttt Try to login again with the user tttt. It is still not possible to log in. This is because pam_faillock does not lock accounts in the traditional sense, it simply blocks logging in when `pam_faillock.so preauth` is called
Thanks for the hint to pam_faillock. This points to faillock, which can be used to reset the user so that a login is possible again: as root: faillock --user tttt --reset So this is not a bug. Thank you.
