I performed a Stage3 Networkless install of Gentoo 2005.0 after downloading and burning the Universal Live CD and the Packages CD for the x86. I followed the handbook instructions, but the files needed to install hotplug are not included on either of the two disks. Also, emerging --usepkg kde requires a large number of downloads. I was trying to install Gentoo on a computer that has NO network or internet connection, but that does not seem to be possible without also downloading the entire distfiles directory from the website. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Use the Gentoo 2005.0 Universal Live CD to boot 2. Follow Networkless install instructions without setting up a network connection 3. emerge -k coldplug Actual Results: When emerge is used to attempt the install of coldplug, hotplug dependencies are determined also, and emerge attempts to access mirrors to download the hotplug files. Installation fails. Expected Results: The hotplug files (hotplug-2004_09_23.tar and hotplug-2004_09_20.tar) should be included in the /distfiles on the Live CD. Also, the dependencies generated for the packages on the Packages CD should be included on the Packages CD. I would much rather download several iso's than have to fuss with all these dependencies. I would very much like to try out Gentoo, but with all of the dependencies that require a network connection, I'm going to have to look elsewhere. Please fix this. I prefer setting things up myself, but I don't have access to the internet where I am.
Hi. we are aware of these issues. Missing hotplug and coldplug missing was an oversight, they are, however, not absolutely necessary to get a working install. For the kde issues you mentioned, see: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87359 Somehow the mirrors got a universal iso with a slightly incorrect snapshot. torrents.gentoo.org has the universal iso with the correct snapshot. We are working on resolving that issue, so with the correct iso there should not be any missing packages except hotplug and coldplug. Roger

Perhaps the ISO should be named 2005.0.1 with all the correct snapshot and package files (hot/coldplug) included so people will know they're getting the correct revision of 2005.0. I downloaded a 2005.0 ISO for networkless as well, not knowing that there was an updated torrent distribution of it (not that it helps with the hot/coldplug issue).
Doing updates on the actual (non-torrent) mirrors is a long and complex process... which is why we don't put out updates via them. Most issues must wait until the next release, unfortunately.
Fixed with 2005.1 release
