Created attachment 818668 [details] emerge info The amount of memory used by plasmashell slowly and steadily increases until the desktop freezes and crashes. early symptom is a lagging and shuddering keyboard, sometimes losing the keyboard altogether. stopping the display-manager and returning to the command line, and the keyboard works perfectly
system has GeForce GT 620 using x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers Installed versions: 390.151(0/390)(03:59:15 PM 08/22/2022)(X driver static-libs tools -dist-kernel -persistenced ABI_X86="64 -32") tried using nv driver - that made everything 3 times as bad
What version of plasma-workspace?

I don't think we can do a lot about this, aside asking you to try and upgrade to latest stable Plasma 5.25.5. Try to reproduce this on a testuser account without any widgets, etc. added; if it does not happen there, add more stuff as you have on your main user account and keep an eye on memory increase. Finally, search for an existing bug upstream or file a new one if the result is 0 and you can link it here for us to track.

FYI we maintain a copy of gentoo stage3 and portage from 2018 (KDE plasma 4) when I install that, everything software/hardware works perfectly w/o issue.

Not aware of any cases where hardware would cause memory increase, except of course for the drivers used and therefore different codepaths chosen in toolkits etc.
Also, when you report this upstream, add as much information as possible. You are describing a runtime problem, yet by only providing emerge --info we can only judge that yes, there are no insane build settings. So, at least add versions involved (kinfocenter provides an easy copy-to-clipboard button), test X11 and Wayland behavior separately, tell approximately how the memory increase rate is etc.
...last but not least, is this a new phenomenon, did it work fine with a prior version of KDE Frameworks or Plasma (5)...
was able to do emerge -DNu world I noticed that it updated both nvidia-drivers, gentoo-sources and KDE plasma. This seems to have resolved the issue.
