Description marco 2005-03-30 06:27:02 UTC
Sometimes when I try to open an URL in Konqueror,
xorg freezes and causes 99% load. Neither mouse nor keyboard
is working any more. Then I have to kill X via ssh.
The issue is that can't produce it to 100%. With Firefox I've never had this
issue. I also think that it is kde 3.4 related. I'm usening Konqueror 3.4.0.
I can't see any error message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

I'm using:
xorg-6.8.2-r1
Konqueror-3.4.0
nvidia-glx-1.0.7167-r1
nvidia-kernel-1.0.7167-r1 (module loaded)

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
An example is the following URL:
http://pginstaller.projects.postgresql.org/FAQ_windows.html
To times xorg was crashing then I couldn't reproduce it anymore.

Actual Results:
X has load 99% and is not accepting an input.

Expected Results:
hmm ;-)

This seems to be an xorg bug. Have a look at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2155
Comment 2 P Nienaber 2005-03-31 14:07:55 UTC
try disabling renderaccel in xorg.conf if it's enabled. this seems to be a common issue with nvidia driver versions >1.0.6000, although it could easily be xorg's *fault*.
Comment 3 marco 2005-04-01 01:02:52 UTC
Unfortunately same result. I've almost tried very many things, including replaceing
the whole laptop.

- every xorg version currently in portage
- every nvidia-driver version in portage
- nvagp "1"
- acpi off

I realised another freeze and it seems to be kde 3.4 related, but only in combination with
nvidia cards. When I open this URL with konqueror http://www.linguistlist.org/~ask-ling/archive-1997.7/msg00321.html
my Xserver freezes. There is no issue with Firefox. What annoyes me the most, is that there's
not one error in no file (dmesg, messages, Xorg.log). I have another machine with kde 3.4
installed (sis onboard graphic) and can call this URL without any problem. Any ideas? Can I do anything to help anybody? Providing with Informations etc?
Comment 5 Ralph Slooten 2005-04-04 07:54:45 UTC
This problem is not KDE-related either (I don't even have KDE). I use xfce4, xorg and a GeForece 2 card, and get this problem sometimes with Firefox. The problem here is always reproducable though when going to the "about" screen with Skype (normally a QT3 popup screen with no borders, which vanishes when clicked on the desktop anywhere).

It seems this issue isn't anything-related, except for Xorg, and possibly the nvidia modules. I have remerged all modules, rebuilt kernels (I use 2.6.11 vanilla), reinstalled QT3, Xorg and even Firefox but the problems remain. No logs either regarding the error.

Logging in via ssh from my laptop shows X using 99% CPU. Keyboard and mouse are not responsive. The only "solution" then is `killall X -9` (or a hard reset if ssh isn't an option).
Comment 6 Caleb Tennis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-04 07:56:36 UTC
Does it do it if you don't use the nvidia modules, but the native driver.

I don't see how we can debug nvidia's drivers.
Comment 7 marco 2005-04-06 23:24:22 UTC
This happens to me also with the "nv" driver maybe I'll try vesa again :-(. This BUG seems to be a very big issue to many people.
Have look here:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2155
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=42583&page=1
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-198023.html

I can reproduce the Bug only with Konqueror (thats the reason why I use firefox only now).
With Vmware too, but I think this is another issue.
Comment 8 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-09 19:41:47 UTC
If you can reproduce only with konqueror and not with firefox, why did you link to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2155, which happens with firefox?

Please file a new bug at bugs.freedesktop.org with this issue after confirming that none already exist; then, post the URL here so we can track it too.

Thanks!
Comment 9 marco 2005-04-12 13:58:07 UTC
For me this happens only with Konqueror, a friend of mine has it with firefox. I don't care.
But simply type gg:xorg freeze into your konqueror addressbar. You will find quite a few once's.
Also on the xorg bugtracker are a few bugs concerning this issue. I'm sorry, if i sounding a bit
upset. This drives me crazy and nobody has the solution. Simply read this thread:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-198023.html
Then you can reassign this bug to whatever you want.
Comment 10 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-12 14:40:26 UTC
I can't reassign a bug to another bugzilla database. You need to file it and paste the URL here.
Comment 11 P Nienaber 2005-12-15 11:16:33 UTC
FWIW this seems to have been (on several systems I have) an issue with
RenderAccel that occurs with a specific video card or cards.
