Sound worked fine in gnome 2.8 but after switching to 2.10 it does not detect the sound card. In the "Multimedia Systems Selector" I tried ALSA, ESD and OSS but they all fail. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.start gnome 2.start any program that uses sound, like totem 3. Actual Results: Error is displayed: Could not access ALSA device "default", check its permissions. Expected Results: sound is supported Portage 2.0.51.19 (default-linux/x86/2004.3, gcc-3.3.5, glibc-2.3.4.20050125-r1,glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.11-nitro0 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.11-nitro0 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.6.10 Python: dev-lang/python-2.3.5 [2.3.5 (#1, Mar 19 2005, 10:53:57)] distcc 2.18.3 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.5 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.59-r6, 2.13 sys-devel/automake: 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.5, 1.4_p6, 1.6.3, 1.9.5 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r1, 2.15.92.0.2-r7 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.14 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.8.1-r1, 2.6.8.1-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -funroll-loops -pipe -fPIC -fforce-addr -ftracer -ffast-math -falign-functions=64 -mfpmath=sse,387 -msse2 -mmmx -msse2 -fmove-all-movables" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -funroll-loops -pipe -fPIC -fforce-addr -ftracer -ffast-math -falign-functions=64 -mfpmath=sse,387 -msse2 -mmmx -msse2 -fmove-all-movables" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks fixpackages sandbox sfperms" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/gentoo ftp://gentoo.oregonstate.edu/pub/gentoo" LANG="en_US" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp/portage" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/overlays/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X acpi adns alsa apache2 apm avi bitmap-fonts bluetooth cdr crypt cups curl divx4linux dv dvd eds emboss encode esd evo fam ffmpeg flac font-server foomaticdb fortran gdbm gif gimpprint gnome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 hal imagemagick imlib ipv6 irmc java jpeg libg++ libwww mad mikmod mmx mmx2 motif mp3 mpeg ncurses network nls nptl oggvorbis opengl oss pam pcmcia pdflib perl pic png pnp python quicktime radeon readline samba scanner sdl spell sse ssl svga tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts usb vim vim-with-x wmf xinerama xml xml2 xmms xv xvid yv12 zlib" Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS ------------------------- # ls -l /dev/dsp lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 mrt 28 08:39 /dev/dsp -> sound/dsp # ls -l /dev/sound total 0 crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 12 mrt 28 08:39 adsp crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 4 mrt 28 08:39 audio crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 mrt 28 08:39 dsp crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 0 mrt 28 08:39 mixer crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 1 mrt 28 08:39 sequencer crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 8 mrt 28 08:39 sequencer2 # ls -l /dev/snd total 0 crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 0 mrt 28 08:39 controlC0 crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 24 mrt 28 08:39 pcmC0D0c crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 16 mrt 28 08:39 pcmC0D0p crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 25 mrt 28 08:39 pcmC0D1c crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 1 mrt 28 08:39 seq crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 33 mrt 28 08:39 timer -------------------------- Tried downgrading alsalib to 1.0.7, re-emerging gstreamer, gst-plugins, gst-plugins-alsa, gst-plugins-esd and gst-plugins-oss but did not have any effect.

Comment on attachment 54648 [details] debug output from running gstreamer-properties this log contains: 1) started streamer-properties 2) in "Audio" > "Default sink" I changed to ALSA 3) i pushed the test button
My apologies. This bug can be closed. There was a problem with the user rights. After adding the user to the right groups sound in GNOME appears to be working. Why this problem did not occur with GNOME 2.8 I do not know.
