I just got my 2005.0 universal X86 and i686 package CDs and am in the process of installing them. It looks like the xorg-x11 on the package CD is missing the font server, and may have been compiled without the "fontserver" USE flag. I'm rebuilding from source with the USE flag. Is this the case, and if so, was it deliberate or accidental?
That was actually on purpose. The font server is going away in future versions of xorg, so we're just stepping ahead of the game a little bit. Client-side fonts are the way to go and are the way things are going, so switching now is probably favorable for future compatibility.
It begs the question then, if xorg-x11 is re-emerged with emerge -uD --newuse world, will it break existing installations? I have held off recompiling until I can understand the ramifications of omitting the font-server. Thx
Well, if you did that, after adding font-server to your USE, it would build the font server. It would be no different than if you compiled xorg without the font-server yourself, then added it later. It is perfectly safe (but we still discourage its use).
I apologise for this bugspam, but I wish to close this product, so I need to move all the bugs.
