Description kyle 2005-03-26 17:41:50 UTC
I just got Gentoo back on my box. ( after reiser4 tearing it to tiny bits )
So its a fresh install.
But for some reason unknown to myself GDM/KDM will not allow non-root users to login, although xdm and gdmflexiserver will.

They both give pretty much the same error.
GDM will give a diolog to users which gives an error about not being able to open display :0.0 ... :(
I've tried all sorts of stuff but I can't figure this one out. :\

( yes I do realize that a lot of those aren't USE flags... I'm just to lazy to
fix it )

probably X problem, permissions maybe.

let bugwranglers handle assigning bugs.
Comment 2 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-27 12:47:08 UTC
You're starting GDM the normal way, ie, using xdm on startup with gdm in rc.conf?
Comment 3 kyle 2005-03-27 15:10:22 UTC
Yes, its when I started it the normal way that it didn't work.
I would change the entry in rc.conf to DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm" ( or whatever it is )
GDM would start normally and root could log in. But not normal usesr.
I think though that it managed to fix itself somehow. :-s because it works fine now.
I'll close my bug. But i'll reopen it if it starts acting up again.
Thanks.

As a future note, I've found issues with Gnome/KDE and user locks within /tmp...sometimes clearing out /tmp resolves login issues like this.
