I think it would be helpful to have a voting system to rate packages. I normally decide between simalar packages based on popularity. Instead of asking on the forums "Which is better: package X or Y?" I could go to the web page and check how many other people liked which. Double plus nice would be to have the same info in portage: ie: number of votes in the package desc. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual Results: n/a Expected Results: n/a
IMHO I have always found this "feature" to be useless on other sites. But I guess other people do use it lol. Nevertheless, this would require some significant coding to do and it's not going to go to the top of the priority list. But I haven't ruled it out entirely yet.
I've given it some thought and... the way I see packages.gentoo.org is a way of "browsing" the portage tree with a web browser: "Portage, only portage." There are plenty of other sites out there that let you rate, discuss, document, see screenshots, etc. software. Also, I always find the "which package is better?" question a bit annoying. How can anyone really say? Is X really better than Y because it got more votes? It's a personal preference. Obviously if package X was better for everyone then no one would be using package Y. So the ratings sites all tend to just be popularity contests. packages.gentoo.org is not a popularity contest.
