After updating to media-libs/alsa-lib-1.2.7.2 my sound stopped working completely. MPD and speaker-test throw errors about "Invalid argument". Masking the following packages restores sound:

=media-libs/alsa-lib-1.2.7.2
=media-plugins/alsa-plugins-1.2.7.1
=media-sound/alsa-utils-1.2.7-r1

MPD output:
ERROR: Failed to open "My ALSA Device" (alsa); Failed to open ALSA device "default": Invalid argument

speaker-test 1.2.7 output:

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.2.7.2/work/alsa-lib-1.2.7.2/src/pcm/pcm_direct.c:1332:(snd1_pcm_direct_initialize_slave) unable to install hw params
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.2.7.2/work/alsa-lib-1.2.7.2/src/pcm/pcm_dmix.c:1011:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to initialize slave
Playback open error: -22,Invalid argument

Hope this helps, I've never reported a bug before. Thanks for all you guys do.

Searching for "Failed to open ALSA device "default": Invalid argument" has many hits.

It is sad to read that you have problems with alsa. The situation seems to be a bit more complicate and requires some analysis.
We can not help you efficiently via bug tracker. The bug tracker aims rather on specific problems in .ebuilds and less on individual systems.

I have had very good experience on the gentoo IRC [1] with questions like this. Of course there are also forums and mailing lists [2,3].
I hope you understand, that I will close the bug here therefore and wish you good luck on one of the mentioned channels [4].
Please reopen the ticket in order to provide an indication for an specific error in an ebuild or any gentoo related product.
