Description Stuart Shelton 2005-03-19 05:20:01 UTC
If I run "rc-status" as an unpriviledged user, I get:

 * Could not local current runlevel in /var/lib/init.d/softlevel
 * Assuming current runrevel is 'single'
Runlevel: single

... no matter what runlevel I'm in.

This works for other people, so I'm assuming that this is related to having "svcmount=yes" and "svcfstype=tmpfs".

The real-world problem is that there appears to be no way for a user to determine whether a service is running or not: rc-status doesn't work (as above: If I attempt to query all services with "-a", everything is shown as "stopped") I can't look in /var/lib/init.d/started (no permissions - and if I did chmod it, the change would be lost after a reboot), and "/etc/init.d/* status" fails too (which I'm going to file another bug report on).

Am I doing something wrong here, or is the svcmount option broken in this case?
What is the canonical way to determine whether a service is running, if not root (and preferably avoiding "ps")

you neglected to provide `emerge info` like the bug report page told you to

please post the output of `ls -Rl /var/lib/init.d/` as an attachment

re-open when you've done these

Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-03-19 11:19:55 UTC
verify the problem still occurs with baselayout-1.11.x+

looking at 1.11.x+, svcmount is mounted with a forced mode of 0644
Comment 5 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-03-19 11:42:05 UTC
err, 4 != 5
Comment 6 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-03-19 12:43:34 UTC
fixed in cvs, changed the 0644 to 0755
