after emerging above dbus version the file /etc/init.d/dbus just holds a pile of control characters, when I cat the file it even seems empty...

Can anyone confirm this, or is this a local problem ?

its ok in CVS. I guess it's just a check-out gone awry, try syncing & remerging.

Looks fine here as well - it wont be the utf8 thing that is forced on use doing this?

Indeed a screwed file, I wasn't aware of the fact the script was hel in files/ subdir. Frightnig though a sync didn't fix the wrecked file (this was the second one).
