When attempting to configure gst-plugins-0.8.7, I get the following error right at the initial configure:

checking build system type... Invalid configuration 'x86_64-unknown-linux-': machine 'x86_64-unknown-linux' not recognized

Looks like this was a problem with my copy of gcc. Recently re-emerged gcc-3.4.3, and now this problem is gone.
