Description Greg Oliver 2002-09-29 03:29:29 UTC
I assume it is my setup since I cannot find it duplicated in the forums. I run:

E16 - ebuilt
ESD - ebuilt
Alsa - ebuilt
GTK+1.2 - ebuilt
XFree 4.2.0 - ebuilt (no opengl)

So far - all I have compiled this go around to test..

All of the gaim ebuilds have exhibited this problem for me under E. I have not
run under any other WMs to test.

Using ESD as audio plugin for it, it will run for weeks, but once I close it, it
crashes the XServer with Xlib: Unexpected async reply messages..

I can take the same tarball, use the same options from the ebuild to configure
it - compile and install it - and it runs fine though.

Very strange problem that took me a while to track down, but is easily
reproducable now.

Hmmm...

No idea. Guess we should start by seeing if Gaim 0.59.4 still does it for you
or if the problem has gone "away"?

What are your CFLAG/CXXFLAGs and what is your USE?

gaim 0.59.5 is out now too

Sorry - thought my email would make it straight to this list, but it dindn't.

Turns out that E or esd seems to be the problem. I have recently started using
Gimp as well, and it can sometimes cause the same Xserver crashes and errors.

Since both apps are GTK, I assume that has something to do with it, but cannot
tell for sure. I have E16, GTK-1.x, gdk-pixbuf, gtk-theme-switch, and
gtk-engines-pixmap installed. I am running XMMS through esd in E. In my
original message, I stated that Gaim only crashed Xserver when i closed it -
which is true, but Gimp crashes Xserver at random when editing images (even
while Gaim is closed).

Running fluxbox with all of the same programs never has a problem though. Since
Fluxbox has no audio support per se, I still run esd like in E.

Sorry, can't really help you out on this one... could be a kernel, X server,
compiler, or glibc bug or flakey hardware :(

If you are able to track it down more please let us know.
