given the impressive number of files in this folder, our mirrors burn their cpu cycles for just for satisfying curiosity of some. 

mode of this directory should be 0711.

isn't that a decision for each individual mirror to make on their own?  instead of a one-line cron job to sync the directory, they could use a two-line script to sync the directory and chmod the perms.

While I can certainly see why some mirrors would object to misc. users browsing files, I can see why other mirrors wouldn't necessarily mind.  Thus, I'd rather not force them one way or the other unless there's a compelling reason to do so.

Closing as wontfix for now.
