Description Coop 2005-03-13 11:09:18 UTC
Using LiveCD 2004.3-r1, downloaded Stage2-athlonXP-2004.3 tarball, extracted tarball, chrooted
After I'm chrooted I cannot use passwd to change root's current passwd. The login still shows livecd, and I did a find on the entire root directory, and couldn't find passwd.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.download stage2-athlonXP-2004.3 tarball
2.extract and chroot
3.type passwd
4.bash - passwd: command not found
Actual Results:
bash returned saying "command not found"

Expected Results:
tried to change root's password

This was during the middle of the installation, following the Gentoo 2004.3
installation docs exactly.

Stage2 is only the bootstrap materials and not a usable system. You will get the passwd program after running emerge system.

It's NOT a problem with the installation, rather it's a problem with the directions of installing an x86 processor. The guide skips the "emerge --sync" and "emerge systems" steps, causing my current problem

I believe you followed the instructions for the networkless install.
Please check again in which docs these steps are missing.

Provide an url and assign documentation bugs to the docs team.

To me it looks like you just looked at the wrong handbook for your choice of install.

Please check what handbook you were looking at and provide an url to verify it is missing.

Roger

Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
