Description Eric Binet 2005-03-11 18:17:46 UTC
I emerged X.org X11 v6.8.0 doing an "emerge --update world" then, X11 always hung when exiting. The console is completely frozen but loging with SSH still works.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Emerge X11 >=6.8.0 on a VIA EPIA CL-6000
2. Use "via" driver in xorg.conf
3. Start X11 and quit

Actual Results:
Console froze up. numlock doesn't even work!

Expected Results:
The console returns to text mode. Shell is ready to handle more input.

I'm using kernel 2.4.

The problem I see comes from these lines in /var/log/Xorg.0.log :
Symbol drmAgpUnbind from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/via_drv.o is
unresolved!
Symbol drmRmMap from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/via_drv.o is unresolved!
Symbol drmAgpUnbind from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/via_drv.o is
unresolved!
Symbol drmRmMap from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/via_drv.o is unresolved!

Here is a complete copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log :

If you build X with USE=dlloader, you can debug this problem using gdb from a remote computer. Take a look at http://wiki.x.org/wiki/DebuggingTheXserver for some more info.

Also, you might want to try 6.8.2 to be sure you've got the latest release, or even replace the drivers with the latest stuff from unichrome.sf.net.
Comment 2 Eric Binet 2005-03-11 19:46:58 UTC
I didn't copy the content of the good Xorg.0.log! Anyways, the unresolved symbols are viaRestoreVideo, viaSaveVideo and viaExitVideo.
These are function calls from the file via_video.c
It seems like this file is not included while building and/or linking. I don't have much time to investigate...
Comment 3 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-11 19:49:20 UTC
If you don't think it's included, attach a build log.
Comment 4 Eric Binet 2005-03-11 20:11:22 UTC
I think I found the "bug"... I was compiling with a USE variable containing "-xv". This causes the via_video.c file to exclude almost its entire content (I think). My assumption is based on the "#ifndef XvExtension ... #else ... #endif" starting on line 83.

So, if someone wants to use the stock via drivers from Xorg, it has to be built with "xv". I had removed it because it depends on opengl and I wanted to exclude opengl support.

Well, I guess I'll have to enable xv and opengl and test the build again... This takes HOURS to build. I'll give feedback as soon as it's ready.
Comment 5 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-11 21:50:54 UTC
Could you please file a bug at bugs.freedesktop.org stating that the via driver is broken when xv is disabled?
Comment 6 Eric Binet 2005-03-12 12:43:00 UTC
The bug has been submitted as bug #2711 at bugs.freedesktop.org.

I compiled with USE comtaining xv and opengl and everything works. I don't like the fact that some USE flag combination can completely freeze up my computer. What can be done about that? Maybe put up a warning when the package is emerged?
Comment 7 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-12 13:00:39 UTC
We'll track it there, since it's an upstream bug.
Comment 8 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-20 13:06:15 UTC
This should be fixed in modular (7.0).
Comment 9 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-20 13:06:24 UTC
Marking fixed.
