We get a fair number of people who can't follow simple instructions sending unsubscribe posts to the gentoo-user list. A typical one of these has 'unsubscribe' as the first word in the Subject: . Is there any way that these can be caught so that the user gets an informative help email rather than starting yet another flamefest on the list? Thanks.
Is it possible to add the unsubscribe mailto link to the auto-sig that is added to all mails passing through the list servers? Or at least a link to the ML list and instructions page on the site? I'm not really sure what is the function of the current recursive mailto to the list in any case.
Catching unsubscribe in the subject is dangerous and could catch legit emails. I'd rather prefer to educate people without using this ugly hacks. Mailing list info is present in the headers and on gentoo.org main page, imho that's enough and I don't think we should add more stuff to our footer.
grep -i '^subject:.*\[gentoo-user\] unsubscribe' returns zero false matches on nearly two years of gentoo-user emails. As for education, it's obvious from emails to the list that it isn't working.
It happened again... *sigh*
Well I vote against this nevertheless, please other infra people voice our opinion. If there's a general consensus I'll implement some way to do this.
Can we restrict votes to infra people who actually read -user please? :)
I really don't see the problem to adding this on this specific list. If it appears to be a consistant problem and having the info avaliable does no good, why not enabled it? How many times will there be an email about unsubscribing on the list? Especially since they tend to start flame wars. (note: i'm not on that list)
...and another one today...
Another one on -user today. And one on -dev as well...
Add a line on the footer that is sent with every email. Like "unsubscribe: mailto:gentoo-<listname>-unsubscribe@lists.gentoo.org
...and another one on -user.
Stop warning about every unsubscribe message on those lists, I'm subscribed... I'm seeing those and you don't need to spam this bug in order to get me finding a solution. Thanks
Not really all that excited about attempting to work around user stupidity. I would much rather see us add a footer to each message with unsubscribe instructions (last I checked on -user, it wasn't there). I don't think it's the place of a mailing list manager to try and catch every possible way a user can do something stupid.
I'm using (experimentally) mlmmj feature to reject messages via regex matching on headers. I'm moderating all messages with unsubscribe (and only unsubscribe) in the subject for gentoo-user. If they are legit I'll let them through. It looks like a sensible setup to me. Let's see how it goes.
Prevented 2 unsubscribe messages on gentoo-user so far. I'm closing this but since it seems sorted out. Please reopen of necessary.
Thanks very much.
