If you have an SATA drive you will need to add a file device.map containing the line (hd0) /dev/sda otherwise grub will not install (gives Error 6 messages). This should be added to the installation documentation. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Maybe could be good idea add this warning to Grub error collection (bug 75781).

OK, We're narrowing down the culprit. The A8N uses the nForce4 chipset. Anyone have success with the VIA K8T800 Pro? (Or can confirm my lack of success?)
what kernel are you using ? what version of grub ?
Kernel is sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9-r14 grub is sys-boot/grub-static-0.93.20030118
i'm using grub-0.96 ... might be worthwhile to upgrade
That's interesting. It seems that sys-boot/grub-0.94-r1 is the latest one that is stable. I tried installing 0.94-r1 but got the same results.
