Description Stuart Luppescu 2005-03-04 09:26:42 UTC
If you have an SATA drive you will need to add a file device.map containing the line
(hd0) /dev/sda
otherwise grub will not install (gives Error 6 messages). This should be added to the installation documentation.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

Maybe could be good idea add this warning to Grub error collection (bug 75781).
Comment 2 Xavier Neys (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-04 15:15:20 UTC
Maybe it is also a good idea to give more details. I do not need this and my SATA drives work OK.
Comment 3 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-03-10 20:21:53 UTC
yeah, i didnt need to do anything funky to make grub work on my sata drive that i now use for my / ...
Comment 4 Stuart Luppescu 2005-03-11 12:59:40 UTC
Hmmm. Maybe it's only on AMD64. (Ooops. It looks like I forgot to specify this. I'm running on an ABIT AV8 motherboard (socket 939) with an AMD64 FX-55 processor.) Xavier Neys and SpanKY, what platforms are you running on?
Comment 5 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-03-11 13:08:53 UTC
A8N-SLI amd64 3500+ :)
Comment 6 Stuart Luppescu 2005-03-11 13:18:09 UTC
OK, We're narrowing down the culprit. The A8N uses the nForce4 chipset. Anyone have success with the VIA K8T800 Pro? (Or can confirm my lack of success?)
Comment 7 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-03-11 13:20:51 UTC
what kernel are you using ? what version of grub ?
Comment 8 Stuart Luppescu 2005-03-11 13:40:08 UTC
Kernel is sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9-r14
grub is sys-boot/grub-static-0.93.20030118
Comment 9 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-03-11 13:47:26 UTC
i'm using grub-0.96 ... might be worthwhile to upgrade
Comment 10 Stuart Luppescu 2005-03-11 14:00:15 UTC
That's interesting. It seems that sys-boot/grub-0.94-r1
is the latest one that is stable. I tried installing 0.94-r1 but got the same results.
Comment 11 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-03-11 14:01:51 UTC
i didnt say 0.96 was stable, i just asked that you try it ;)

I haven't had a chance to try the unstable grub, because the machine is already
in production. I don't think I ever, will, either. Sorry.
Comment 14 Jonathan Smith (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-06-22 16:38:24 UTC
in that case, since you are the only one who can reproduce, marking as invalid
