Description Lance Albertson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-02 16:13:38 UTC
Hey all,

I'm not sure if this is written in policy or what the general rule is, but are you still trying to enforce that irc nicknames be the same as their gentoo email address? I know it may not seem like a big deal, but personally as an administrator for users, its extremely annoying to sit back and try to figure out that user foo is really user bar on toucan. Also, its hard to know what username to use for email address unless I go to the dev page and look it up. If anything we should highly encourage our new developers to stick to these guidlines. If they can't, I'd like to see a reason for it that makes sense.

Of course, other people will be grandfathered in, but perhaps we should consider maintaining some user aliases that point to their email if we still have problems.

I'm not sure, I just noticed some new devs coming with where nick != email and I wanted to have that addressed. From an administration point of view, its hard to manage.

Cheers

I agree with this to a point, and we try to keep them the same, but
speaking from irc experience and from what i've heard from some of the
devs: irc nicks aren't always available, or they want something
specific, but they want their email addresses to be a bit more
professional then their irc nicks, which i can fully understand.

It might be worth aliasing nick@g.o back to their actual user account if
that helps you track people better, but i'm not fully sure how to really
enforce it unless we provide an alias to go with the account if someone
wants their email address to be a bit more sane then their irc nick may
 be.

with account info kept in ldap, is this really an issue ?
Comment 3 Lance Albertson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-09-15 19:39:59 UTC
Perfect example, how many of our devs really know that bonasi is really patrick?
Its mainly confusion for those who converse with them on irc and then have no
idea who to email when they need to. I suppose we could make aliases for such
things, but i'd rather have devrel push new recruits to matching it unless
issues like the nick already being taken come up and they don't want to change.

New recruits are pushed towards matching nicks, per recruiters, however as Lance pointed out, it is not always an available option.
Closing bug.
