There was nothing done really in 8.1.0 timeframe for the python bindings:

There is a new API implemented in 8.2.0 though. Would it make sense to stabilize the latter then? On the other hand, current stable version is 7.7.0 and there was a lot done since then until 8.1.0 even.

v8.2.0 is stable.
