I did
emerge cocoon
it worked
i then tryed to deploy cocoon to tomcat-5.0.28
but it fails 
catalina.out complain about missing org.apache.log4j.Priority class

I then compiled cocoon by hand
and generate a war using source generated by ebuild /path/to/cocoon-2.1.6.ebuild unpack

and deployed ${S}/build/cocoon.war to tomcat 
it worked...

is this still a problem with tomcat-5.0.28-r1 , i'm not sure because you said that it works if you compile cocoon manually but i've fixed an bug (bug #84206) in -r1 which is related to log4j.

please use the 5.0.28-r1 release as it seems to work fine with that one, the -r0 version in portage will disappear soon as that version makes use of packed jars and isn't compatible to our java policy. feel free to reopen if you disagree and think that the problems aren't fixed in that revision.  thanks.
