BOINC is already in Gentoo, and the Astronomy project already exists for "space" stuff, so why would this actually be needed? Why not host on Gitlab or GitHub or any other Git host service?

It's for specific optimization of Gentoo. Why not host on github or gitlab? Why not host it on the Gentoo site?

There simply doesn't seem to be any reason to. Other Git hosting services are available.
