Can you try with scilab-3.0-r1?
I tried out scilab-3.0-r1 and still get this problem on both my athlon-mp at work and my pentium-m laptop at home. No toolbar icons, and the shade malloc errors in the scilab window on startup.
I can confirm this bug.
I could not reproduce. (I always get tcl/tk widgets even if I compile with "gtk" and "gtk2" USE flags...) Could you try version 3.1.1 (in Portage) and tell us how it behaves for you?
This continues in the last scilab package scilab-3.1.1-r3. The only USE flag that I set was the gtk.
According to Scilab's site, GTK+ is not officially supported. Recompiling it with sci-mathematics/scilab Xaw3d -gtk +tcltk in /etc/portage/package.use solved the problem.
Please reopen if this remains an issue with scilab-4.
