Description Markus Goppelt 2021-11-05 16:10:26 UTC
I'm experiencing a weird malfunction. x11-terms/gnome-terminal echos some characters to the non-graphical environment (console). I start a Gnome session with GDM. I start gnome-terminal and do something like this:

markus@ryzen ~ $
markus@ryzen ~ $ echo pre > /dev/tty2
markus@ryzen ~ $ ßßß
bash: ßßß: command not found
markus@ryzen ~ $ echo post > /dev/tty2
markus@ryzen ~ $

I will also attach a screenshot. My locale is "en_US.utf8". The character I entered three times is "Latin Small Letter sharp S" (hexadecimal DF or decimal 223 or octal 337). My keyboard is German, there is a corresponding key. When I press the key I get an echo in gnome-terminal, but also to /dev/tty2. I paused my machine on shutdown and made a screenshot with fbgrab. I will attach the screenshot.

I get a similiar result when I start the Gnome session without GDM from the console with "XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland dbus-run-session gnome-session".

The unicode characters

"ä" Latin Small Letter A with diaeresis (decimal 228)
"ö" Latin Small Letter O with diaeresis (decimal 246)
"ü" Latin Small Letter U with diaeresis (decimal 252)

don't echo to the console when I press the corresponding keys.

It looks similar to bug 715526, but it was solved with bash-5
Comment 5 Tee KOBAYASHI 2021-11-05 18:40:34 UTC
I would try to narrow the problem down by checking whether the echo is reproduced by:
 * pressing the key inside the gnome-terminal without being followed by Enter key,
 * cutting and pasting the letter to the gnome-terminal, and/or
 * pressing the key outside the gnome-terminal.

I would also try to identify who echos by using the strace command (dev-util/strace).
Comment 6 Markus Goppelt 2021-11-05 21:02:43 UTC
I will try these steps.

I found out that it doesn't happen in an Xorg Gnome session. And it also doesn't happen when I enter the character with "CTRL + SHIFT + u". And then the four hex digits 00DF.

The return key is not needed. I can enter the character via keyboard and then close the gnome-terminal window with "ALT + F4".

It's sufficient to start the Wayland Gnome session and press the key. Could this be a keyboard driver problem?

Only the key produces the result.

Comment 10 Tee KOBAYASHI 2021-11-07 22:44:09 UTC
So we need to change the summary to better describe the issue. gnome-terminal does not seem to be relevant here.
