I've emerged media-sound/emu10k1-0.20a-r7 because the module included with the kernel ignores the settings of /etc/emu10k1.conf The problem: It seems the ebuild doesn't create a module because when I try to load the module it fails because modprobe can't locate it: # modprobe -v emu10k1 install /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install emu10k1 && { /usr/bin/emu10k1-script restore; } FATAL: Module emu10k1 not found. FATAL: Error running install command for emu10k1 In fact,if I run # equery f emu10k1 I can see that no files are created at /lib/modules To see if the problem were in the restore script,I've edited /etc/modules.d/emu10k1 and commented out the 2 lines, the run modules-update, but I get the same error: # modprobe emu10k1 -v FATAL: Module emu10k1 not found. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.emerge emu10k1 2.modprobe emu10k1 Actual Results: Modprobe fails with the error: FATAL: Module emu10k1 not found. Expected Results: load the emu10k1 kernel sound module # emerge info Portage 2.0.51-r15 (default-linux/x86/2004.3, gcc-3.3.5, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 i686 Pentium II (Deschutes) Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Python: dev-lang/python-2.3.4-r1 [2.3.4 (#1, Feb 13 2005, 19:39:52)] dev-lang/python: 2.3.4-r1 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.59-r6, 2.13 sys-devel/automake: 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.5, 1.4_p6, 1.6.3, 1.9.4 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.10-r4 virtual/os-headers: 2.4.21-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=pentium2 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/bind /var/qmail/alias /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium2 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" LANG="es_ES@euro" LC_ALL="es_ES@euro" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 3dfx X apache2 apm arts avi bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts crypt encode f77 font-server foomaticdbgd gdbm gif gpm imlib jpeg kde libg++ libwww mad mikmod mmx motif mpeg mysql ncurses nls oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib png python quicktime readline samba sdl spell ssl svga tcltk tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts voodoo3 xml2 xmms xv zlib" Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LDFLAGS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
Yeah, it's there for the utilities, not the driver. Use alsa!
