When you close kaffeine, the window dissapears, but a 'kaffeine' process is left behind, consuming about 30-40 megs. I noticed the problem after going over a directory of short clips, I was clicking on them at random, and closing kaffeine after previewing each one. After a while my memory was full (including the swap file), other processes started crashing when they couldn't allocate memory any more, and running 'ps' revealed that there were like 50 kaffeine processes still running. This is probably not Gentoo related, you can try contacting the author directly. There's already a report here, too: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1104507&group_id=86937&atid=581406
I second this bug. The Sourceforge Page just backlinks to this Bug here at Gentoo. I compilied Kaffeine 0.4.3 against SuSE 9.1 and Fedora Core 3 with there SRPMS. None of this distributions show this behavior. Is this really not related to Gentoo?
Have you tried with newer versions? it works fine here with kaffeine-0.6-r1 and xine-lib-1.0
