Description krio 2005-02-10 16:12:58 UTC
now on 2004.3 mini, but i remember this on 2004.1 universal. thougth did not test other versions.
right now i am stuck on emerging ati-drivers. locks up on random places while compiling.
on 2004.1 uni i remember getting a lockup right on fdisk..

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. get to the adding kernel modules chap7 handbook-x86.
2. emerge ati-drivers

Actual Results:
a deadly lockup on random places while it gcc.

Can you please be more specific?

Are you
 - on the bare livecd ?
 - in the chroot on your harddisk ?
 - in a fresh installation, entered via either Boot from HD or Boot
   from cdrom + chroot?

Also, random lockups mostly originate from faulty hardware. Did you try the various bootoptions like nosmp, acpi=off, noapic, ... ?

Could you give us a breakdown of your hardware? The more specific, the better...

Also, try running "memtest86" as a boot option to the LiveCD and see if it gives any errors.

i boot from live cd mini (burned on minicdrw, inserted into hp cd-writer 9500), config the network,
swapon /dev/hda2
mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile
emerge ati-drivers
i hope i did not screw with it.
and last time it died on:
gcc -c -02 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strict-aliasing -ansi -pedantic -Wno-return-type -w -I../../exports/include -Dlinux -D__i386__ -D_POSIX_C_SOURCE=199309L <..spaces..> -D_POSIX_SOURCE -D_XOPEN_SOURCE <..spaces..> -D_BSD_SOURCE -D_SVID_SOURCE <..spaces..> -D_GNU_SOURCE <..spaces..> -DFUNCPROTO=15 -DNARROWPROTO -DXTHREADS -D_REENTRANT -DXUSE_MTSAFE_API -DUSE_SNPRINTF -DLIBXT -fPIC Selection.c
dont mind if any typos - typed it off screen.

i got ati x800 pro, aureal vortex, hp cdrw 9500, pioneer dvd drive (dont remember any specs), 2 hds: 40gb, 120gb.
maybe i can get you more exact specs after i open it up. i dont have any boxes/checks left..

besides, somehow it is only gentoo wich freezes on my specs.
freebsd, redhat, mandrake, winxp pro never freezed or crashed as i remember, so memory _should_ be ok.. but what is funny is that i found out that memtest86 FREEZES....
2 times tested first freezed on pattern ffefffff second ffdfffff...(test 4 moving inv, 32 bit pattern, cashed; 96k - 768m 768m)
the memory is 768M (4 duals 1 - 256m each, 2 - 128m each)
memtest gives chipset i850 (ECC: Disabled) / FSB : 57 Mhz

whatta?.......
Comment 4 krio 2005-02-11 14:56:59 UTC
now, when i did a lot of testing, i can say that it is not my hardware.
i changed the memory 4 times, played with bios settings but got nowhere further then twicing the time before it freezes....
any ideas?

maybe later today ill get to try it on a different pc but with the same motherboard and cpu.

alright, probably it is not just live cd..
i've finished the install, booted into the new system and it freezes right on xorg-x11 emerging (livecd freezed somewhere in the same spot)..
memtest86 freezes everytime around 32 bit pattern test.
but i've changed the memory, tried a lot of rdram settings combination in bios but got nowhere.
any freakin ideas?????

If you have changed the RAM, then it sounds like it would be your motherboard. Now that we've determined that it is a problem with your hardware and not the LiveCD, I'm going to mark this one INVALID. Feel free to continue to post here for troubleshooting help. I just don't want it showing up in my report of open bugs... ;]
