Description Martin von Gagern 2005-02-09 03:47:19 UTC
I had a working environment using 1.0.6111. After updating to 1.0.6629-r1 (current stable), I can't use the internal TFT of my Dell Inspiron 8200 at its maximum resolution of 1600x1200. I get the following lines in my Xorg log:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using default mode "1600x1200" (hsync out of range)
(**) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes for display device DFP-0:
 (**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1400x1050": 122.0 MHz, 64.9 kHz, 60.0 Hz

My display looks very strange as well. I have indeed a usable display area of approximately 1400x1050, but this is neither located in the center nor stretched to the full screen size. Instead I get a bunch of 1px wide vertical lines in different colors right of this area. Below this area there is an approximately 10px high horizontal bar in different shades of gray (also overlaying the colored lines mentioned above) and below this the bottom portion of the screen is repeated.

If I manually change resolution (Ctrl, Alt, Num +/-), I get a smaller display area, but the garbage around remains. I can even use the special notebook function keys to stretch the image to "full screen", but the area used is still only 1400x1050, with garbage all around.

Using an external monitor, I experienced none of these problems.

1.0.6111 should not be removed from the portage tree unless this is resolved.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge -u nvidia-{kernel,glx}
2. reboot
3. startx

Actual Results:
- only part of the screen used for contents
- virtual desktop larger than physical
- garbage to the right and below

Expected Results:
- full screen 1600x1200 desktop
- virtual and physical desktop size match

s/bottom/top/ - the top area is repeatet at the bottom. Sorry.

Further information:
downgrading to 1.0.6111 works fine, as does my 1600x1200 vesafb mode.
Comment 3 Jeremy Huddleston (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-09 16:30:36 UTC
Have you filed this report with nVidia? My card is working fine at 2048x1536
Comment 4 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-09 20:09:40 UTC
Just wanted to quickly note that bugs.freedesktop.org has an nvidia proprietary driver component in the xorg product.
Comment 5 Douglas Robertson 2005-02-25 14:09:06 UTC
You can fix this by loading your nvidia module with the following options:

NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=0

So, in the file
/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

put:

nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=0
Comment 6 Martin von Gagern 2005-04-13 16:06:37 UTC
Thanks, this worked.
Where do I find such options?
Comment 7 Martin von Gagern 2006-01-05 04:52:21 UTC
The problem was solved for 1.0.6629 by adding the given module options.
But after updating to 1.0.8178, the problem was back, as the given options no longer work. Changed subject accordingly.

With the options as given, I got no X at all:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "1600x1200":
(WW) NVIDIA(0): vertical sync width (1236 - 1206 = 30) greater than 16
(EE) NVIDIA(0): No modes remaining for display device DFP-0
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to unmap registers.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to unmap registers.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to free registers.
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

When I changed NVreg_Mobile to 1, as this is the setting for Dell laptops according to README.gz, I experienced the same trouble as described above.

I have the full Xorg log, as well as an nvidia-bug-report.log, ready to attach if any of this information might be useful, although I doubt it right now.
Comment 8 Sebastián Scarano 2006-04-10 06:45:10 UTC
I'm experiencieng something alike with the nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx 1.0.8756

Normally I have my resolution configures at 1400*1050, after emerging the 1.0.8756 version the max resolution was 1024*768

I "solved" it downgrading to the 1.0.8178.r3 version

Saludos

If you still can reproduce this w/ current x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers versions, bug nVidia about this.

Closing a stale bug.

To conclude from my side: most new nvidia driver releases had this problem in some form or other, and I finally got tired of it and changed to nvidia-legacy-drivers, which seems to work well enough.
