When I try to start gnome from either KDM, GDM, or startx at the command line, gnome will get to its splash screen, then it will start metacity, the splash screen disappears, and it seems like gnome-panel is stuck in a loop, starting, dying, etc?. well, i tried to start gnome-panel manually from TWM, and it starts, same as nautilus, so it's not those two packages. I tried to start gnome-session, and as expected, it dies. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. log into gnome from GDM 2. log into gnome from KDM 3. log into gnome using 'startx' at the cmdline with XSESSION="Gnome" Actual Results: gnome-session starts its splash screen, then continues on to start metacity and gnome-panel, but gnome-panel starts, and quits halfway. restarts, then dies halfway again, over and over in an endless loop. Expected Results: gnome should have started, presented me with the desktop, and allowed me to continue on with my work. warren@Tidus ~ $ emerge info Portage 2.0.51-r12 (default-linux/x86/2004.3, gcc-3.4.3, glibc-2.3.4.20041102-r0, 2.6.10-gentoo-r5 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.10-gentoo-r5 i686 Pentium III (Katmai) Gentoo Base System version 1.6.8 Python: dev-lang/python-2.3.4 [2.3.4 (#1, Jan 7 2005, 09:57:25)] ccache version 2.3 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.4 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.59-r6, 2.13 sys-devel/automake: 1.8.5-r2, 1.5, 1.4_p6, 1.6.3, 1.7.9, 1.9.4 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r2 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.10-r2 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.8.1-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig buildpkg ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo http://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo http://gentoo.seren.com/gentoo http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X aac aalib acpi aim alsa apache2 apm arts audiofile avi bash-completion berkdb bidi bitmap-fonts bonobo cdr crypt cscope ctype cups dga dio divx4linux dvd dvdr dvdread encode esd ethereal f77 fam flac font-server foomaticdb fortran ftp gd gdbm gif gnome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml icq imagemagick imlib ipv6 java joystick jpeg kde libg++ libwww mad maildir mbox mikmod mmx motif mozilla mpeg msn mysql ncurses nls nptl nvidia oggvorbis openal opengloscar oss pam pdf pdflib perl php pic pie png posix python qt quicktime readline samba sdl spell sse ssl svga tcpd tetex theora tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts usb wmf wxwindows xine xinerama xml xml2 xmms xscreensaver xv xvid zlib" Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS
we are going to need actual errors. Post output from your xorg log file and/or ~/.xsession-errors.
reformatted machine, re-emerged, works like a charm. changing status to resolved - worksforme
