I think that, even if still keeping older major versions for the people still needing them, it would be interesting to stabilize latest version as it also fixes many bugs over current stable

Current stable 1.4.5 fails to build on ppc (bug #827902).

Stabilizing 4.0.5-r1 on ppc/ppc64 would be a good idea as this one builds fine.
