I tried to run hald as daemon, but it shutted down silently. So I ran "hald --verbose=yes --daemon=no" and this is what I get: 00:00:35.678 [I] hald.c:394: hal 0.4.5 00:00:35.678 [I] hald.c:398: Will not daemonize 00:00:35.680 [E] hald_dbus.c:1945: dbus_bus_acquire_service(): Connection ":1.6" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.Hal" due to security policies in the configuration file Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge hal 2. hald --verbose=yes --daemon=no" 3. restarted your session and all that ? I don't know, the error report is not very explicatory. It seems to me some permission/user error, hal should have no problem connecting to the sys bus. What dbus version do you use ?

restarted dbus & hald ? haldaemon (the user) has the right to connect to that service, so my guess something is wrong with your hald setup (which should be ok by default).
> restarted dbus & hald ? Yes, and my setup is the default one
i've had a report where dbus & hald were built with different kernel headers/kernels . Could this be the case here (try rebuilding both packs vs the same headers) ?
Maybe.... or maybe a version problem. But I re-emerged hal and dbus, and everything works fine now. Thanks!!
