I was also not able to switch to framebuffer console and back to x with gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.10-r6, this is possible as well after changing to development-sources 2.6.10-r1
Comment 2 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-06 16:21:37 UTC
Sounds like a clear kernel bug.
Comment 3 Micheal Marineau (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-06 22:33:47 UTC
Did this happen on previous versions of gentoo-dev-sources?
Comment 4 Ralph Glass 2005-02-07 12:04:47 UTC
I used 2.6.5 and 2.6.7 (gentoo-dev-sources) before without the bug.
Worked with xorg 6.7 and 6.8 (old ati-drivers).

If you use the standard Xorg drivers (as opposed to the propietary ATI ones), does it still freeze on exit? Does disabling your framebuffer help? Have you tested 2.6.11-rc3?
