I recently discovered that a raspberry pi I have which has always used udhcpc from busybox as its client no longer could get an address. I see it fails with the error: udhcpc: socket(AF_INET,3,255): Operation not permitted And using strace, it seems that is: socket(AF_INET, SOCK_RAW, IPPROTO_RAW) = -1 EPERM If I run it by hand, as root, it works. emerge --info to follow Reproducible: Always

Switching to dhcpcd works around the issue
Have you recently migrated systems or something? It sounds a bit lke it's lost caps or similar.
I did rebuild it fairly recently, but I'm 90% sure it was working after re-imaging it. I've reinstalled wpa_supplicant, netifrc, and busybox on the target itself to no avail (the only packages I could think of in the critical path).
Sam helped me from IRC, basically after reinstalling all pkgs with caps USE enabled, the problem went away. Problem was definitely created by me when I imaged it.
