Mplayer crashes when you try to view *.wmv video files.
I compiled Mplayer with -fstack-protector

When I don't compile Mplayer with -fstack-protector Mplayer works and plays the video.

.wmv files use win32 dll's for playback and don't play nice with stack-protector.  That said, no real way for me to fix them as they aren't open-sourced..
