when using the 2005.0 upgrade guide.
glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1-lib32.tar.bz2 contains a /lib32/libpthread-2.3.4.so, 
emerging glibc installs /lib32/libpthread-0.10.so. Until
libpthread-2.3.4.so is deleted all 32bit binaries will break.
