I just recently installed a fresh gentoo installation and followed most of the defaults. I installed metalog since it was the recommended loger (I've used other loggers in the past). Then I when to the printer installation docs and and noticed that after modprobing the parallel port it asked me to look in /var/log/messages. To my surpise the file was missing! At first I thought that I had forgotten to install a logger but after a bit of looking around I saw that metalog had spewed the messages into a bunch of files over several directories. This isn't good or bad but I had always thought that /var/log/messages was a standard (and expected) part of most unix systems. Would it be possible to have the metalog ebuild add symlink /var/log/messages -> everything/current ? e.g. # cd /var/log && ln -s everything/current messages I'm not sure if /var/log/everything/current is the metalog equivalent of messages but if so this would solve much of the surprise problem. If this change isn't made in the metalog ebuild then all the gentoo docs should probably be changed to not refer to /var/log/messages Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
FYI 0.8-rc1 know available
there's already a bug open about the new metalog with respect to adding some kind of symlink, no docs-team: feel free to put a small not in the logger section of the handbook or just close the bug
I just noticed in the printing docs there is a comment about "other loggers" that I had missed. My bad. No reason to keep this bug open.
INVALID or DUPLICATE, whatever. Closing. Thankyouverymuchpleasecomeagain :)
