i use fluxbox 0.9.11 on top of the actual 6.8.0-r4 package on a Matrox G400 pci (using pci matrox for the superb 2d display quality). now i noticed that when i move a window while a copy transfer (hard disk) is ongoing, it would stop until i place the window. scrolling inside windows (like in firefox up and down quick and rapidely) does not affects the transfer at all though. interesting though that xmms can still play while dragging and i can still streamrip from internet, so it does not affects every IO. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.install xorg and fluxbox 2.copy from hard-disk to hard-disk in verbose mode, or have an emerge (whatever package ongoing) 3.while the copy/emerge process is ongoing click on the top of a window and move the window around. Actual Results: 4. the copy/emerge process will hold until you drop the window. Expected Results: it should be multitasking/multithreading and finish first operation (copy/emerge) even while i am dragging/moving windows around Portage 2.0.51-r15 (default-linux/x86/2004.0, gcc-3.3.5, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.10-ck5 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.10-ck5 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+ Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Python: dev-lang/python-2.3.4 [2.3.4 (#1, Nov 7 2004, 10:43:07)] distcc 2.16 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled]ccache version 2.3 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.4 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.59-r5 sys-devel/automake: 1.8.5-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.2-r7 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.8.1-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon-xp -march=athlon-xp -O3 -ftracer -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -fprefetch-loop-arrays" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon-xp -march=athlon-xp -O3 -ftracer -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -fprefetch-loop-arrays" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp:///ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/gentoo/ ftp://mirrors.sec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/gentoo/ http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/gentoo/ http://ftp.lug.ro/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 3dnow 3dnowex X alsa apm arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts cdr crypt cups divx4linux dvd dvdr encode esd f77 fam flac font-server foomaticdb fortran gdbm gif gnome gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 imagemagick imlib ipv6 java jpeg junit kde libg++ libwww mad matrox mikmod mmx mmx2 motif mozilla mpeg ncurses nls oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline samba sdl slang spell sse ssl svga tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts xml2 xmms xv xvid zlib" Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS
Can you reproduce this with gentoo or vanilla sources?
yes just retried with my 2.6.9-gentoo-r1 kernel. performed a "find ." in a "gnome-terminal" window (tried also aterm and Eterm) on built in hard drive, or external USB2.0 hard drive. once i move a window around the HD activity LED will go off and the process stops until i drop the window. see emerge info below. relevant hardware used: amd barton 3000+ ShuttleSN41g2 (Nforce2 chipset) 1gb ram agpgart loaded agp: ati 9700pro (modules loaded but not used in xorg config. Can't reproduce this, I suspect it's your kernel or hardware.
