Why doesn't mpd-svn actually pull the svn revision, instead of a mysterious tarball on someone's homepage?

Because the snapshot way is preferred by Gentoo ebuild policy[1]. Read "CVS sources policy".

Besides, mpd development isn't going in any ultra-rapid pace to justify live svn ebuild. I'm in daily contact with the developer (shank), and I try to update the snapshot whenever it seems like it's worth it.

As for the "mysterious tarball on someone's website", you're free not to trust it, and not to use it. Write your own live svn ebuild and use that, if you like.
