Description John Jabusch 2005-01-26 18:13:18 UTC
There is no "vi" in the Stage 3 build for the 686. It has nano, but nano is somewhat limited, and I keep typing errors. Okay, maybe I don't learn quickly enough some days. But working through the install, using dozens of other commands I know well, is great. Using nano requires pausing a lot. I have been using vi for more than 25 years. It was on the minimum boot cd, but never got moved to the hard drive. As a new user of Gentoo, it's taking a while to figure out where to get vi from the list of so many packages. Guess I have a lot of reading to do.

Nano is used in the stages because of its size. This has been requested several times, but vim is simply too big for the stages and it won't be pulled in. Nano may be limited, but it works and there shouldn't be the need for a highly functionable editor, seeing that it is also possible to use a different editor from outside the chroot.

Not only that, but nothing is stopping you from doing an "emerge vim" to pull in vim yourself.

Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
