Description Mikle Kolyada (RETIRED) archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2021-05-20 10:40:14 UTC
Hello!

I would like to have a clear answer from council about the Libera network status in Gentoo.

The current state of affairs is:

1. The entire #gentoo-* namespace has been registered to Gentoo
2. I have claimed 75+ #gentoo-* channels so we are now having full control (except national and arch-specific channels, let it be done later)
3. The groupcontacts connections have been established
4. The gentoo/developer/${nickname} namespace has been registered to Gentoo
5. I am in the process of adding more people for groupcontacts needs

To sum up, we have zero problem with Libera admins as they are all mostly ex-FreeNode admins, but before we start giving irc cloaks out/verify nicks I want to make sure if we are going to move our channels there officially or not (because moving will take time, for sure).

I dare say that whether we officially move or not, some of our users will move anyway. I feel like the most likely outcome is that we'll have to maintain our presence there and on Freenode simultaneously, if only to prevent further impersonations.

I would fight tooth and nails to avoid this scenario, imagine the workload, and after all it just looks suboptimal to double efforts for nearly the same results.
I am pretty sure there is a way to lock the #gentoo- namespace on FreeNode (chan modes allow this), if we choose Libera as the main source of activity.

Why should Gentoo depend on third-party IRC providers in the first place? Are there reasons why it's not on the .g.o infrastructure? (moderation?)

This debate rails on with regard to Github, but I think there is merit in this question. Perhaps the Council can answer as to why they are unwilling or unable to resource an IRC network, in the same vein as to why they struggle to maintain 'acceptable' forums as a means of communication with their community?

Bugzilla is not really meant for discussions like this.

Please move this to the appropriate Gentoo mailing list and keep this bug focusing on what it has been filed for...

Ok, it has been solved as per [1].
