I have downloaded the install-amd64-universal-2004.3-r1.iso LiveCD, however when i come to set my network up i am unable to. It cannot detect my eth0, however the lights on my notherboards network port are on. My motherboard is a Asus K8V Deleuxe, and the Network is a US Robotics wireless, however i am plugged directly into the router with wires and not the wireless. Would it be possible to update the live cd's to accomadate this? I am new to gentoo. Many thanks, Alex Major
I'm confused here. Are you using the built-in wired ethernet or wireless? If you're using the wired ethernet, then I'm not sure I understand the issue at hand. Also, if you are referring to the US Robotics card, then you will need to provide the chipset of the card, or at minimum the model number, otherwise there isn't anything that we can do.
Sorry for my lack of specificty. I am using the built in wired ethernet. I run net-setup and go through the various screens but then afterwords when i type ifconfig eth0 i recieve the message: eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found. The module for my built in ethernet does not appear to be included with the livecd. When i try to go to the folders which are specified in the manual install instructions they do not exist. When i try to load /kernel/drivers/net i recieve the message: -/bin/bash: cd: /kernel/drivers/net: No such file or directory. Same message when i try /lib/modules/uname -r I don't believe the drivers for my ethernet are included with the liveCD, and on the install manual it says to submit a bug report so that i can get an updated LiveCD.
The directory is /lib/modules/2.6.9-gentoo-r1/kernel/drivers/net on the 2004.3-r1 InstallCD. The `uname -r` is not a quote, but a command to run, that executes a "uname -r" to get the version of the running kernel. Anyway, net-setup won't install any modules, but rather is only useful once your network card is detected. Can you do an "lspci | grep Ethernet" and give me the output?
Output is: 0000:00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c940 10/100/1000Base-T [Marvell] (rev 12) Thanks for the quick reply
What about "lsmod | grep sk98lin"? What happens when you "modprobe sk98lin"? Does it then work?
thanks, thats really great. It now works!
Excellent... glad I could help!
btw, this is a known issue and is part of our technotes errata at http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/technotes.xml?part=2&chap=5#doc_chap1
