I suffered through this problem for about 3 weeks, just found the solution. Please see the very end of the attached URL for more information.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge hal
2. rc-update add hal default
3. reboot

Actual Results:  
system hangs

Expected Results:  
booted normally

added hal-0.4.5-r2 with a patch to fix this, please test.

this was fixed upstream, no problems found with patch or current version.

yeah next time it would be appreciated if you checked back earlier when i actually put the time in to add patches & fix up ebuilds.
