The standard KDEDIRS setting (/usr) causes the X fontpath adjustment in startkde to fail, sys_odir and sys_fdir are set to the non-existing (!) /usr/share/fonts/override and /usr/share/fonts respectively. This might be considered a feature (;-), however, then the fonts that come with kde (in /usr/kde/3.3/share/fonts and its subdir override) are not used (there are some console fonts there). I am not sure how the KDE people would want KDEDIRS to be set. This codepart from startkde is not modified by gentoo, so they seem to expect /usr/kde/3.3 to be in KDEDIRS (or, it is an upstream bug)? Anyway, I never really understood the whole KDEDIR vs. KDEDIRS business. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. This is where the spurious 'xset: bad font path element' warning in .xsession-errors comes from. However, even when the paths are correct (e.g. by manual modification of KDEDIRS) this warning is still triggered since /usr/kde/3.3/share/fonts/override doesn't contain any fonts ... Is this a bug or a feature?
I submitted http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78326 All seems to work fine even with that bug, though, I think we can leave things as they are now and see what kde folks do.
I think you meant http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97249 Thanks!
With kdelibs-3.5.4-r2 the KDE install path is first in the list.
