After the merge -u world upgrade of xfree to xorg-x11 there are no standart x11 fonts installed like -adobe-helvetica-* or -b&h-lucida-*

USE=bitmap-fonts emerge xorg-x11.

to build the bitmapped fonts should be the default (especially when its meant as upgrade of the xfree package which has them built by default)

the use flag should be no-bitmap-fonts

Yes, it should be. That's why it's in most of the profiles.

grep bitmap /etc/make.profile/make.defaults
